Figure 1.1 - Economic Strategies — A Value Chain Approach

Graphic outlining a value chain approach to economic strategies for business growth, including bottlenecks that impede growth. The first stage is "discovery research, basic science, academia." Bottleneck #1, the "need to improve investment in research and development" arises at this stage. The second stage is "commercialization, start-ups, entrepreneurs," and the third stage is "network of small and medium-sized enterprises." Bottleneck #2, a "lack of skilled workers limits expansion," occurs between these two stages. The fourth stage is "anchor firms, scale, export, business leaders" which is where bottleneck #3, the "need better market access to expand exports," occurs.

Figure 1.2 - Innovation Canada

Flow chart that demonstrates how new Budget 2017 initiatives will work together. Canadian entrepreneurs and companies access federal government support through Innovation Canada, a toolbox of support for all innovation-related programs. Global companies access support through the Invest in Canada Hub, the Government's global salesforce and single window to attract global investment. The Invest in Canada Hub feeds into an Economic Strategy, which consists of six Economic Strategy Tables to identify innovation opportunities. The Economic Strategy then feeds into Innovation Canada, which in turn feeds into two categories of other activity. The first category is "Sharpening Canada's Competitive Edge," which includes a superclusters competition, the Strategic Innovation Fund, and the Impact Canada Fund. The second category is "Helping Canadian Companies Grow and Succeed," which includes the Venture Capital Catalyst Initiative, the Accelerated Growth Service, and Innovative Solutions Canada. Underpinning this entire flow chart is the Comprehensive Innovation Program Review. All measures in the flowchart are described throughout Chapter 1.
